THE ARCHIVE

WARDROBE

It’s no secret that I love fashion - my wardrobe is closer to an archival collection of the designers I admire, rather than a purely practical lineup.  Over the last decade that I’ve been hunting down archival designer pieces, I’ve accumulated many “grails”, prototypes and limited editions. This is the space is where I want to showcase them.

Although my tastes have changed (matured - maybe) over the years, the general overall direction has remained consistent. I like to think of it as an ongoing exercise of exploration, testing, and refinement.

The aesthetics and silhouettes I’m attracted to are defined by characters and context. Context (and attitude) is very important in fashion - being based in Malta has made it feasible to invest in a strong spring/summer wardrobe due to the favourable climate here. The characters I’m attracted to are often rooted in past eras - the ‘80s are a significant influence, as well as musical subcultures.

To translate this to designers and brands - my favourites will always be Haider Ackermann and Umit Benan. I own the most pieces from them. They are both colourists and storytellers when it comes to collections - their clothes are often colourful, patterned, and are grounded in a certain context/backstory. Some of Haider’s designs during his short tenure at Berluti also feature in the archive.

Naturally, pieces from brands such as Dries van Noten and Charaf Tajer’s Casablanca also make sense in this context. Lately I have been exploring the source DNA of the designers I like, which have sent me down a rabbit hole of ‘80s Gianni Versace and Armani.

What I plan to do with this space will adapt - I definitely want to document the pieces to serve as a digital library of sorts, but I am also open to selling or renting. I always believed that at the end of the day, they are just clothes. There is no point in treating them as precious museum pieces that never end up seeing the light of day; clothes are meant to be worn out in the real world.
