DAR INNOCENZJU

ARCHITECTURE

A seemingly innocent house.

The exising building is a typical Maltese townhouse, occupying a long and narrow plot. Ideas of space and materials that are typically found in traditional houses are reinterpreted to create a different and amplified spatial expieriece.

A thick wall defines the treshhold between inside and outside, and how one interacts with the outside world. On the ground floor which houses the main living spaces, the wall opens up to the garden. Conversely on the more private sleeping quarters upstairs, the wall is defined by more introverted openings. The ceilings of these spaces also follow suit - public vs private, extroverted vs introverted, high vs low.

Beyond this wall, the extension culminates in a double-height loggia to enjoy the walled Mediterranean garden; this disconnected oasis provides refuge from the urban condition of the town.
